GEOTRACES team

GEOTRACES is an international programme aiming at obtaining water column data throughout the globe.

The IUEM/CNRS lab manages operations and makes available instruments labelled GEOTRACES which enable data to be integrated into the programme.

The GEOTRACES team operates the CTD rosette, conditioned for fine analysis of dissolved metals in seawater in very low concentrations. Analyses conducted on-shore with very sensitive apparatus enable the detection of hydrothermal plumes hundreds of miles from the vent and the modelling of the extension of the plumes. Extreme caution is required when deploying, recovering and manipulating the sample bottles so as to avoid contamination of water samples.
